Chaining Up Procedures for Winter Driving Conditions

As we enter the winter season, it is crucial for all drivers to be prepared for adverse weather conditions, particularly when it comes to chaining up vehicles. This memo serves as a reminder of the procedures and requirements for chaining up, ensuring safety and compliance with state regulations.

1. Understanding the Need for Chains During winter months, especially in mountainous or snowy regions, the use of tire chains is often necessary to maintain traction and control. It is essential to be aware of local chain laws, which may require commercial vehicles to carry chains at all times from November 1 to May 31. Failure to comply can result in fines and unsafe driving conditions.

2. When to Chain Up Drivers should chain up when:
  • Snow accumulation exceeds 4 inches.
  • Road conditions are icy or slippery.
  • Signs indicating chain requirements are posted.
Always assess road conditions and use your best judgment to determine when chaining up is necessary.

3. Chaining Up Procedures When preparing to chain up, please follow these steps:
  • Find a Safe Location: Pull over to a safe area away from traffic. Ensure you are on level ground if possible.
  • Gather Equipment: Ensure you have the appropriate chains for your vehicle. Chains must consist of two circular metal loops, one on each side of the tire, connected by at least nine evenly spaced chain loops across the tread

  • Inspect the Chains: Before installation, check the chains for any damage or wear. Do not use damaged chains.

  • Install the Chains:
    1. Lay the chains out flat and untangled.
    2. Drape the chains over the tire, ensuring they are centered.
    3. Connect the ends of the chains securely, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
    4. Drive forward a few feet to allow the chains to settle, then recheck the tightness and adjust as necessary.
  • Test Drive: After chaining up, drive slowly for a short distance to ensure the chains are functioning correctly and not causing any issues.

4. Safety Precautions
  • Wear Appropriate Gear: Always wear gloves and warm clothing when chaining up to protect against cold weather.
  • Be Aware of Surroundings: Keep an eye on traffic and ensure you are visible to other drivers while you are working.
  • Follow Local Regulations: Adhere to any specific local or state regulations regarding chaining up and driving in winter conditions.

5. Training and ResourcesIf you are unfamiliar with chaining up procedures, please reach out for training resources or assistance. Stay safe and drive carefully!
